The government says that Covid-19 does not spread in our schools, but this is a lie. If we just take the case of Leicester we can look at the government’s own “heatmap” data which tracks infection rates per 100,000 population across all age groups. In the run-up to Christmas it is clear that the single age group that had the highest rate of Covid-19 infections was 15-19 year olds.
Moving to the present the most recent for data shows that 15-19 year olds remains the single age group where infect rates remain highest. As of May 22, the infection rate in this age category was 202 cases per 100,000 population. This is just less than double the infection rate from the week earlier (on May 15 there were 103.1 cases per 100,000 population), which in turn was approximately double the rate of infections from the week before that.
